Winning Start for Sutton’s 4th & 5th XIs!
Last Saturday saw Sutton’s 4th and 5th XI's begin their Surrey Cricket League seasons with encouraging wins against Old Isleworthians & Hest, and Bec Old Boys respectively.
At Holmwood Close, Bob Foster’s 3 for 28 helped reduce Old I’s to 166 for 8, while Paul Liddiard led Sutton’s response with a stylish 58 runs in a 2 wicket victory. At Northey Avenue, Simon Bliss, with a cultured 65 runs, rallied the 5s to a total of 156 for 8. Under fire from a youthful 5s attack, which included Surrey U12 Harry Allen bagging 4 wickets for just 4 runs, including a hat-trick, the Old Boys capitulated to a mere 50 runs.
Meanwhile, in the club’s final series of pre-Surrey Championship friendlies, Sutton’s 2nd XI (157 for 8) beat Weybridge 2s (135 all out) by 22 runs at The Green; Andy Siefers filling his proverbials with 5 for 25, supported by Spencer Champ's 3 for 25.
To round-up a pretty good day for the Popinjays, the 1st XI played-out a very exciting 'tie' at Cheam Road against Weybridge 1s, each side scoring 157 on a difficult strip. Gary Outram continued his good form in accumulating 54 well-crafted runs, while Dave Mitchell, 2 for 26 and Sam Woods, 2 for 22, were the pick of the bowlers. For all Saturday's stats, click here.
On Sunday Ashtead CC dominated in an eight wicket victory in the first round of the Cockspur Cup against Cheam, to set-up a 2nd round tie against Sutton on May 18th at Woodfield Lane.
Laws of the Game: MCC to come down hard on composite bats!
"While we do not want to discourage innovation, we want to ensure bat manufacturers make bats made of willow and bat handles of cane, rubber and glue. That's the rationale behind it, so that in 10 to 15 years, we still look at a game that resembles what we watch now. That's our job - to safeguard the health of the game."…….more here.
