What's happening at Cheam Road!

ERIC CLARK (May 19, 2009)
ERIC CLARK

We were all deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Eric Clark and send our heartfelt sympathy to the family during this difficult time.

Neil has written a few words about his father, which he wishes to share with you.

"It is with great sadness that I write to inform members of the death of my father on 12th May 2009.

Eric, who was a fast medium seam bowler and hard hitting lower order batsmen, joined Sutton in 1969 from Mitcham Cricket Club which he had joined as a 16 year old in 1949. He was a regular in an immensely strong Mitcham side during the 1950's and 60's and for much of this time he formed part of a formidable bowling attack which included Eaton Swabey, Dennis Marriott, Kenny Moore and Winston Stafford..

After moving to Sutton in 1969 at the age of 36 he featured in the senior XI's well into his late forties and albeit at a reduced pace he continued to be effective as a tidy economic bowler who bowled a heavy ball and gave very little away.

Upon his eventual retirement from senior cricket Eric became interested in coaching so that he could continue his involvement in a game that he loved so dearly. He rose quickly through the coaching ranks achieving MCC Staff Coach Status and in 1989 took up a full time position with the MCC at Lords where he worked for 12 years before moving south of the River to The Oval where he continued to coach until his death.

Eric also managed and coached Surrey age group sides and contributed to the development of many young cricketers who subsequently progressed into the First Class and International game.

The funeral will be at 1.30 on Friday 29th May at All Saints Benhilton, All Saints Road, Sutton, and afterward from 3pm at The Grange, Beddington Park, London Road, Wallington.

All friends from the cricketing community are welcome.

Neil Clark."
