Letter from Oz - No.4! (January 05, 2008)
Hello all and Happy New Year to you!
Since my last mail I have been up to quite a bit; so here we go............
Pre Xmas we went to Phillip Islandwhich is where you can see a heap load of penguins return to land after a hard day at sea. It was an awesome evening and to see them do their stuff and see them up close was quite something, although I nearly didn't get to see them as I was caught trying to take a picture of one on my phone, [as no photography is allowed;] oops!!
On to Xmas eve and me and three other 'poms' hit the local club and with a combination of a beer funnel and a variety of drinks through the afternoon, evening and night there were a few sore heads celebrating Xmas day in 25 degree heat with a BBQ and a couple more drinks that had to be polished off! Boxing Day was spent watching the cricket at home and then we tried to venture out in the evening but that didn't happen. We went to the third day of the test at the MCG which is an amazing place and got some great pics but cannot get them onto the computer so disappointed with that!
A couple of days before new years eve we drove to a place called Torquay to catch some waves and rays and that is exactly what happened, a very nice way to spend an afternoon even though we nearly got run over by a surfer, if you can get run over by one?
Celebrating new years in Melbournewas by far the best one I have celebrated. We started off with more playing card related drinking games which resulted in numerous funneling of beer, but this time in 42 degree heat!!!! Free train up into the city and got to the club/pub around 6 and as you can imagine getting there so early there were few things we could do but carry on drinking and taking in the sights. The place we went to was called Transport and it was right on the river bank, cost $50 (20 quid) to get in and you got two 'free' drinks and as much food as you wanted, so we made sure that every waiter came to us first and I think we ate the majority of the food between us!
I thought there would be a good chance of meeting some Aussie people there but three of the 4 people we were with were from Essex and Peckham! Although I did meet one lovely lady from Melbourne, so not too bad! [Oi, oi……ed!] 12 o'clock rolled round and we watched the fireworks kick off and they were pretty impressive! Stayed about in town until the early hours and made my way home for a well earned sleep!
Since then haven't really done a lot apart from going to a different couple of beaches and trying to learn how to skim board very unsuccessfully. Not sure what is happening in the near future although being paid for work would help me out a great deal. Cricket starts again next Saturday and the temperature is regularly hitting 35 degrees so that should be interesting!
That’s all for now along with the news that I am coming back to play for Sutton next season for definite which I am sure you are all delighted with, ha-ha! [That is great news…….seriously……I mean it…..!!!!!......ed.]
Take care,
