Letter from Oz - No: 2! (December 16, 2007)
Club stalwart Sam Schofield is spending the English winter in Australia. Based in Hampton, a few miles outside Melbourne city centre, Sam has somehow cajoled the good folks at Hampton Central CC into believing that over the next 6-months, his presence at their club will enhance not only the club's bar takings but also improve the skill level of at least one of their Grade XIs! Here's Sam's second 'Letter from Oz'.
"Hi all, Another update on what I have been up to over the last couple of weeks. The weekdays have been again spent enjoying the weather and going to the local shopping center, Southland, which is enormous and has everything you could imagine including very helpful shop assistants who are rather easy on the eye to say the least! The Australian who I am staying with took me to the rock pier along the beach which has its fair share of wildlife and will be a place where we will spend a day or two having a drink and some food as it is a great spot to spend the day. That is what I have been up to when I have not been working; when I have been working it has been for a rubbish removal company one of the guys at the club owns. We drive around in a truck to people’s houses and building sites and pick up building material and other stuff and take it to the dump. It pays well and I get to see more of the city so I am happy doing it, although working in 37 degree heat is a little hard work. The cricket has gone really well, we started our match two Saturdays ago against Omega and rolled them for 130 in 50 odd over and ended the day 2-34. I did not get a bowl and had no catches to take so a nice easy day in the field to make my debut for the club in the 1st grade.
On the Friday before the second Saturday working on a demo site I had a nail go through my foot which ended up with me going to the hospital, having it poked by the doctor and having a tetanus injection.) [What some will do to get a glimpse of a nurse's uniform!.....Ed.] This meant I was unable to bat and we passed their score 6 down to take the win. We now lie joint second with 3 other clubs on the ladder and are playing top of the table Bentleigh Uniting at the weekend who are regularly scoring 250+!!!!! Another pom from the club in Worcester arrives today so as I won't be working I will probably spending time catching up with him and doing some more chilling out! Hope all is well with everyone and the club and keep enjoying the weather!!!!! Cheers, Sam." Click here to return to the News page
