Last Saturday saw Sutton’s 4th and 5th XI's begin their Surrey Cricket League seasons with encouraging wins against Old Isleworthians & Hest, and Bec Old Boys respectively.
At Holmwood Close, Bob Foster’s 3 for 28 helped reduce Old I’s to 166 for 8, while Paul Liddiard led Sutton’s response with a stylish 58 runs in a 2 wicket victory. At Northey Avenue, Simon Bliss, with a cultured 65 runs, rallied the 5s to a total of 156 for 8. Under fire from a youthful 5s attack, which included Surrey U12 Harry Allen bagging 4 wickets for just 4 runs, including a hat-trick, the Old Boys capitulated to a mere 50 runs.
Meanwhile, in the club’s final series of pre-Surrey Championship friendlies, Sutton’s 2nd XI (157 for 8) beat Weybridge 2s (135 all out) by 22 runs at The Green; Andy Siefers filling his proverbials with 5 for 25, supported by Spencer Champ's 3 for 25.
To round-up a pretty good day for the Popinjays, the 1st XI played-out a very exciting 'tie' at Cheam Road against Weybridge 1s, each side scoring 157 on a difficult strip. Gary Outram continued his good form in accumulating 54 well-crafted runs, while Dave Mitchell, 2 for 26 and Sam Woods, 2 for 22, were the pick of the bowlers. For all Saturday's stats, click here.
