Three Times A Loser & Twice on Sunday! (April 19, 2008)
On the season's first Saturday of cricket, the Popinjays lost all three encounters against Bickley Park CC. The 1s by 8 wickets; the 2s by 74 runs and the 3s by 7 wickets. Considering the weather forecast it was amazing that any cricket was played at all, let alone all games going the distance. That said persistent light rain affected all games although there were no breaks in play.
The 1s had the worst of the conditions in their match at Bickley Park Road. Defending a total of 172 for 9 from 40 overs, the ball became increasingly difficult to grip through an hour or so of unrelenting drizzle, during which the Park’s captain, Richard Clinton, latterly of Surrey CCC, led his team to victory in little over 30 overs.
Outram’s aggressive 75, was Sutton’s only score of note, although Muse and Sartor contributed decent cameos. Youngsters Nadeem and Woods were the only wicket takers.
Sutton’s playing weekend got worse when only the Sunday 3rd XI managed a victory, a 64-run win against Carshalton Athletic CC at Holmwood Close. The Sunday 1st XI lost away to Indian Gymkhana CC by 2 wickets and the 2nd XI to Hawley CC at Cheam Road by 6 wickets.
