Here's a new one...................rain stopped play! (April 14, 2008)

Sunday 13th April saw Keith Medlycott take a top quality XI to Kenton Court Meadow, for a pre-league season friendly against Sunbury CC. We started 30-minutes late due to the inclement weather, but were off 90-minutes later, never to return. (Gallery here.) |
Something always happens, we’re told, when ‘Nelson’ is reached. True to form, when Sunbury arrived at 111-4 after 23 overs, plenty of Sutton legs were raised, Shepherdesque style, and then rapidly set into motion as our lads raced from the square with the heavens opening yet again.
Not surprisingly, with the covers on and a pursuing thunderstorm for luck, the match was abandoned half-an-hour before tea was due, without another ball bowled. Still, there was football on TV in the host’s clubhouse! On the other hand, this made the afternoon even more frustrating as Utd’s providential success against the Arsenal, (…..Ed’s privilege!) left a number of the standing-room only throng feeling as gloomy as the weather conditions had been all afternoon.
Although the rain brought a premature end to the club’s first match, it was good to be there and to know that the new season has definitely made a start. Let’s just hope the weather doesn’t get in the way too much this year! Thanks to our hosts who were, characteristically, their hospitable selves. (Match stats [?] here.)
