Surrey Championship ECB: 2nd XI Premiership Winners 2009; Div 1 Winners 2011;
3rd XI Div 1 Winners 2011.
Founded in 1857, we are a club with a wonderful cricketing history, all of which was celebrated throughout 2007 as we reached our 150th year! The first team is supported by a progressive playing structure. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Saturday XIs compete in the ‘ECB: Surrey Championship.’ Premiership competitions. The 4th XI play in the Surrey Cricket League 1st Division, whilst the 5th XI play in the Surrey Championship 4th XI Eastern Region competition. We often field a Saturday 6th XI, which plays friendlies against clubs throughout south/west London, and Surrey.
On Sundays the '1st XI' combine their duties by competing in the Surrey Trust League, various cup compettitons, and some strong friendlies; while the '2nd XI' play a number of competitive friendlies. Our Sunday Cups XI also competes in various competitions which include the Cockspur Cup.
Our Sunday 3s play 'social' friendly cricket against numerous clubs with whom we hold long-term playing relationships. This XI plus our Mid-Week XI's similarly friendly cricket, reinforce the belief that the main reason for playing this wonderful game is for enjoyment and the social perspective which cricket should foster.
There is an expanding and successful colts section at the club, which provides the various regional and county age-group squads with a growing supply of emerging young cricketers. All age-groups from U-8 to U16 represent the club in the North East & Central Surrey Colts League. The colts joined in the 150th year celebrations in 2007 by setting-off on the club’s inaugural colts tour!
By holding the England & Wales Cricket Board’s, (ECB) ‘Clubmark’ accreditation, Sutton CC is recognised as providing good quality cricket programmes for young people. In addition, the ‘Clubmark’ accreditation scheme is fully integrated with ‘Safe Hands,’ the ECB’s welfare of young people in Cricket policy.
Champions - 2006!  Champions - 2009!
2nd XI Champions - 2009!
Following promotion to the Surrey Premiership in 2005, playing a style of aggressive cricket not seen in the competition for some time, 2006 proved to be the most successful season for many a year.
Driven by the skilled guidance of captain, Keith Medlycott, the first team pulled out all the stops and, pursuing their aim to play only hard-hitting cricket, ended the season as highly regarded ECB: Premiership Champions.
Skipper Medlycott considered Sutton’s first Surrey Championship title for 15 years ranked as one of the highlights of his illustrious career.
Keith, who won three County Championships and four one-day titles as Surrey CCC coach, believes his achievements as a, 'veteran player,' were just as sweet. "This club is thriving," Meddars said at the time. "The players came together at the right time in their careers and they’ve matured into a fine team that wants to win things, " Keith said. Medders, who is now pursuing his own highly productive youth coaching programme world-wide, left the club with a wonderfully motivated group of class players, young and seasoned. The club has a great future, thanks to Keith.
Just to prove it, the club exceeded all expectations in 2009 by winning the Premiership under Phil Sampson and the 2nd XI Premiership unbder Richie Day. Numerous competitons were won by our junior section. 2009 was truly a memorable year for Sutton Cricket Club.
However, the following season, 2010, proved as disappointing as the previous one was unbelievably satisfactory. A number of club stalwarts decided that it was best for them to conclude their cricket careers on a high and consequently, the success of 2009 lead to a number of fine players deciding to 'call it a day' all at the same time! The 1st XI survived some difficult moments to remain in the Premiership; but the make-up of the 2s and 3s was unbalanced by the retirements, and both struggled all season, finally surrendering their Premiership status to find their selves facing the 2011 season in their respective first divisions.
There were some highlights in 2010 though! The 1s made the Surrey Championship T/20 semis; the 5th XI won the Surrey Championship 4th XI Eastern Division and will start 2011 season in the competition's Premier Division. The Trust XI made the final stages of the Surrey Trust competition again; this time failing at the semi-final stage against a highly drilled, impressive Normandy side. The U17s won the inaugural Dennis Jacobs Surrey County Cup, in a low scoring final against Farnham at Cranleigh CC. After putting themselves into bat, Luke Barnard and Sam Woods ripped through the Farnham order, who were all out for 88 runs. However, we did not find it easy to achieve the target; but finally took the trophy with a 2-wicket victory during which a 9th-wicket partnership between the two seamers Robbie Quinton and Luke Barnard played a significant part in the club's success. A number of our colts age-group XIs also found success within the NEC Colts League structure.
After a number of organisational changes within the club we looked forward to 2011 with renewed enthusiasm; and we were not dissapointed. See 2011 Season for report. After all the good things at the club, on and off the pitch during 2011, 2012 can't come soon enough!
Cheam Road - our main ground.
We always welcome new members to our club, and if you are interested in playing for the 'Popinjays' or simply joining as a social member, drop us a line. We hope to see you down at Cheam Road soon.
