SCC Colts News! U11 vs. Purley (June 14, 2010)
WINNING UGLY
Purley U11 90 for 8 (24 overs)
Sutton U11 92 for 5 (18.4 overs)
Sutton Win By 5 wickets
Sutton U11s maintained their unbeaten start to the league season with a hard
fought victory over a decent Purley side who fought all the way in a low scoring
match. Despite the warnings of overnight rain and threatening cloud throughout,
we were blessed by a dry if humid morning and the big stage at Cheam Road for
the first time this season.
Patrick won the toss again and asked Purley to bat hoping to take
advantage of a slightly green top and any residual overnight moisture (we
thought of that afterwards but it does sound good) and hoping for a return to
the heady days of Deadly Derek spinning out all comers on uncovered wickets.
The decision again
looked to be the right one as Sutton's bowlers kept the opposition batsmen in
check with hostile, if often wayward bowling that kept the run rate down to 3
an over for the first 10 overs but without taking any wickets. With a hint of
disappointment, if not panic, setting in at the lack of wickets, the team had
to be reminded that 30 for no loss off 10 overs was actually an excellent
start for us and a lot better than 50 for 3 off 6. The pick of the early
bowlers was our U10 import Jaimin who bowled 3 excellent overs for 5 runs
including 2 maidens. Not until the introduction of spin did the wickets begin
to tumble and the fielding sharpen up. Patrick's 3 for 11 from 3 overs included
a fine diving tumbling catch from Harry that would have graced Spellbound in Britain’s
Got Talent with Marcus tumbling over him in the process. Jack repeated the feat
with a great catch from a skier off Ayrton's bowling that saw almost half the
team converging on the ball but with only Jack calling and clinging on to the
ball in what looked like the fielding equivalent of a Red Arrows display. Quick
change artist Harry also picked up 2 wickets before swapping gloves with Sam G
who had kept well in the face of some wayward bowling early on, and Ayrton
and Sam M again proved to be fine death bowlers with 2 and 1 wickets
respectively. The bowling in general was far too sloppy with 49 extras making
up more than half the Purley score. There were 22 runs conceded in no balls
alone with half of those for overstepping which is a very poor and uncharacteristic
effort. Only Sam G and Patrick failed to bowl a no-ball or wide. In other games
that would have cost us dear, and Purley let us off the hook a little at 90 for
8 off their full 24 overs.
At this point your usual correspondent deserted his post and so the record of
the Sutton response is taken uncut from post match mobile
phone interviews with the captain.
oh it was like really sick
coz we batted like really good but Purley had a well fast and good bowler
Matthew who got me out for like 8 or something with the best ball of the
match(!) and then he got Ayrton out I think with another well good ball,
but 'Arry was still in and batted like really cool and got like 26 or
something when we was losing wickets after Jack hit a well smart 4 but
then got out slogging after which I think it was like Marcus, or Eefan or Sammy
G or somebody who batted like really good to see us through with like no
sweat really although some people like mum were like getting a bit worried
I was sure we would be ok as we had loads of like overs and stuff and Eefan and
Sam batted like really sensible even though there was a lot of dots and
stuff and some like well dodgy calling at times. We could have done a bit
like better but Purley had some sick bowlers and we didn’t have to score like
really fast so it was ok like and it made no difference that you weren’t there
giving us rubbish advice and instructions and by the way do I get paid for
this???......
So it was a victory in the end and those who were there will know how close
the above is to reality. The scorebook shows a relatively comfortable win but
in truth we made it hard for ourselves especially in the field. However, the
team is building momentum and getting results which is important of course for
confidence. However, we will need to up the ante in games to come and
concentrate once again on keeping the oppo under pressure in the field and
not giving away cheap runs. Its Reigate Priory next so there will be no room
for sloppy cricket. Thanks to Purley and David and Jo in particular for
providing good opposition, a bunch of polite boys and a decent match
played in good spirit.
