Stylish end to U11's season!

(July 22, 2009)
Sutton Under 11s have saved the best until last this season and finally chalk up a victory at home against Purley, with the help of 3 under 10s and 3 under 9s.
The team this week may have been a little on the small side, but it was perfectly formed! Not to be outdone, England also managed to win against the Aussies for the first time at Lords in 75 years, so this has been a significant weekend for both teams.

Purley won the toss and put Sutton in to bat on a slightly damp pitch and with rain threatening. Sutton's opening batting pair put on 11 runs with the loss of only 1 wicket, but the next pair in lost three wickets. Sutton then rallied and no further wickets were lost throughout the innings with the final score being 263 for 4. Sutton's best batsman was Sam Griffin, who scored 15 runs, with skipper Toby Woodward the only other batsman to reach double figures. 2 of the Sutton wickets were taken by Tom Bragg.

Purley then began their innings, with Sutton's opening bowlers taking 3 wickets in the first two overs. The second batting pair put up a good fight and put on 26 runs for the loss of only 1 wicket, but then Sutton's bowlers took wickets regularly and mercilessly with Purley ending on 222 for 13 - Nelson strikes again! The rain was teasing the umpires throughout the innings - on several occasions the umpires decided that the occasional shower was heavy enough to bring the players off, only to have the shower abate before the boys had even reached the boundary rope.

Purley's best batsmen were Ollie Meadows (27 not out) and Harvey Jenkins (21 runs, but out 3 times). Sutton's best bowlers were Jonathan Eales 4 for 13, Charlie Tonkin 3 for 5, Toby Woodward 2 for 16. Jamie Smith, the Sutton keeper also performed well taking a sharp catch and a stumping and Sutton skipper, Toby Woodward took 2 catches, including a C&B off the last ball of the innings to rub salt into the wounds.

Champagne moment: Hammad Khan was run out off the bowling of a girl for almost making his ground, but forgetting to run his bat in.

Man of the match: for a good all round performance with both bat and ball as well as in the field, the man of the match is Charlie Tonkin.
